You may or may not be seeking therapy to address
issues specific to your identity or sexuality,
and we are here for that. However, like many marginalized or “othered” populations, members of the LGBTQIA+ community have diverse needs when it comes to mental health and well being. While society moves toward inclusion and diversity, bullying and discrimination are still very prevalent for LGBTQIA+ individuals. The effects of stigma, trauma, and oppression can weigh heavily, contributing to stress, depression, isolation, and anxiety at times.
Navigating the unique challenges that LGBTQIA+ individuals face especially requires being heard, validated, supported, and empowered. At New Leaf, we prioritize training for our clinicians to be able to serve this community with acceptance, humility, dignity, and respect. If you are someone who identifies as part of the LGBTQIA+ rainbow, we are committed and dedicated to supporting you.
LGBTQIA+ individuals may benefit from:
- Exploring identity and/or sexuality
- Working through gender dysphoria
- Getting connected to local & national resources
- Support in finding community
- Prioritizing mental health & well-being
- Navigating family & peer relationships
Although LGBTQIA+ people often experience a very different reality than others, many difficulties brought to therapy are the same as the general population. Relationship issues, financial struggles, stress management, anxiety and depression, trauma, medical challenges, and grief (to name a few) are not unique to LGBTQIA+ people. However, it is critical to have a therapist who is progressive, accepting, knowledgeable, and considerate of how your world might feel very different in the context of your individuality.
