This blog shares 30 LGBTQIA+ journal prompts. Existing as an LGBTQIA+ person, in a world that hasn’t always embraced you, can leave lasting emotional scars. This is especially true if you grew up having to hide or deny your identity. With that, there can be lasting trauma around self-expression, self-understanding or exploration, and feeling content in your own skin.
While seeking out therapy with an LGBTQIA+ affirming therapist can be immensely helpful, what can you do yourself to flourish? In what ways can you explore who you are, and write your story, in a way that feels good to you? One way would be to journal! Journaling is an effective tool for reflection, gaining insight, and reflecting.
Make sure to read our blog on How Journaling Can Improve Your Mental Health and Well-Being. We discuss 3 reasons or ways that journaling can be a successful coping tool outside of therapy. Challenge yourself to complete all 30 of these journal prompts to reflect on your life and experiences!
Our Simi Valley therapists are LGBTQIA+ affirming. We prioritize training for our clinicians to be able to serve this community with acceptance, humility, dignity, and respect. If you are someone who identifies as part of the LGBTQIA+ rainbow, we are committed and dedicated to supporting you.
Setting up your journaling
Journaling is a practice that can feel private and sacred. Your journal contains deep, meaningful reflections of your everyday life. It may even contain sensitive or distressing information about your past or present. Therefore, choose a journal that feels like you, and writing materials that make writing more enjoyable.
I personally like the soft-cover flexi journals by Paperblanks. You can explore the various designs linked here. These journals are easy to travel with, comfortable to write in, and make journaling feel like a special practice. I also enjoy using Zebra gel pens, which can somewhat keep up with the pace I’m writing up.
You may want to personalize your journal with stickers, memorabilia, and more. Whatever makes your journal feel more like a representation of your mind and soul. Having a blank journal and a pencil is also a great option. Especially if you want to separate yourself from any difficult topics you’re processing in there.
